Increasing cost of living, expenses on education of children, increasing cost of housing property in Indian force every family in India to look for ways and means of increasing their household income.
As a result, women in India who are mostly known as housewives are forced to go for jobs. In urban India women represent an impressive number in the workforce. As an example in the software industry 30% of the workforce is female.
In fact, female employment in India on the whole, has increased by 4.6% per annum. According to The register Generally of India .the proportion of women in the workforce in 1981 was 10.7 percent and it rose to 22.7 percent in 1991 further rising to 22.7 percent in 2001. They are at par with their male counterparts in terms of wages, position at work place.
Even in rural India, Agriculture and allied industrial sectors employ as much as 89.5% of the total female labour. In overall farm production, women’s average contribution is estimated at 55% to 66% of the total labour.
According to a 1991 World Bank report, women accounted for 94% of total employment in dairy production in India. Women constitute 51% of the total employed in forest.

There is a significant impact of professional life on personal life. Women have started sleeping less than before because only when they wake up early they can cook for the family, Get ready for their job, get their children ready for school, so on an average, women lose 2 hours of sleep per day and up to 14 hours sleep per week.
It is not just about the reduced sleep, but such a lifestyle builds stress. This stress is passed on to the family and frustration level builds up in the family. Their leads to relationship problems.
Many Indian families are still living as joint families along with the parents and in -Laws. This adds to their stress further because they have to live up to the expectation of every family member and this in turn affects their health.

Work life balance is a phenomenon that occurs to those who are gainfully employed and have to manage their personal life. We are all engaged in a number of roles every day and we hold a number of roles throughout our life. Today’s women are mostly into full time services and are working 8 hours per day and 5 days in a week minimum and are confronted by increasing workload every day. So, most of them carry work and responsibilities home but balancing these two complex situations in today’s fast life requires talent, tactics, skill and caution.
Almost 50-55% of the women are struggling to achieve work – life balance. Women have to come up with high work targets, office commitments, tight meeting schedules and the duties and responsibilities of life and home.
